FE Report
One alleged snatcher was killed and two others injured in two separate gunfights with policemen in the city's Gulshan and Pallabi areas on Sunday midnight as part of the ongoing special drive by DMP.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been conducting the drive since Thursday midnight (May 14) aiming at curbing the growing lawlessness in the capital.
As part of the drive, the DMP has deployed four patrol teams comprising plainclothes police officials in each of its 35 stations to nab criminals, including snatchers, drug peddlers and illegal arms holders, who commit crimes at night.
A patrol team of Gulshan police station chased a group of snatchers in an area adjacent to the Gulshan Staff Quarters while the gang was trying to snatch away valuables from a person at gunpoint at about 11:30pm.
During the chase, the muggers were running away by firing gunshots targeting the patrol team that forced the plainclothes cops to fire back.
At one stage of the gunbattle, one snatcher of the gang Manik alias Chikna Manik (30), was caught in the gunfire after receiving a bullet at one of his legs.
He was immediately rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from where he was shifted to Suhrawardy Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries there at about 3:30am.
Another patrol team of Pallabi thana chased another gang of snatchers and became locked in a gunfight with them. Two snatchers were wounded and admitted into the DMCH with bullet injuries while others managed to escape from the scene with firearms. The snatchers are Rubel (18), and Shamim (20). Rubel identified himself as a tea vendor and Shamim identified himself as an electrician.
But both of them denied the police allegation that they were snatchers. They said the police illegally caught them from Kalsi Road in Mirpur-12 area while they were going home.
The police said they also recovered two sharp weapons from the spot.
