FE Report
The Rapid Action Battalion Saturday arrested an alleged Islamic militant for threatening to blow up a five-star hotel in the city during the just concluded South Asian Games, the elite force said.
The RAB said Anisuzzaman Rajib was arrested from Banani on a tip-off 10 days after he threatened to bomb Westin Hotel in Gulshan where top athletes and officials of eight South Asian nations were staying.
Rajib, 26, is an active member of the banned militant outfit, Harkat-ul-Jihad Al Islami (HuJI) and he made the threat to foil the SA Games - the biggest sporting gala in the region, Additional Police Super Mizanur Rahman said.
The HuJI, outlawed in 2005, is the country's one of top two notorious Islamic militant groups whose leadership has been blamed for series of bombings across the country including the grenade attack on the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2004.
"Rajib made the phone-call to Westin on February 4 after instructions from the group's high-ups. We traced the call for days before finding his location at Banani," Rahman said.
The RAB said the young HuJI recruit has admitted his 'involvement' into the act of terrorism that forced the authorities to step up security in all major venues of the Games.
The eleventh chapter of the SA Games concluded on February 9, with Bangladesh enjoying its best ever show in the medals tally. The hosts also earned praise for smooth and glitch free conclusion of the event.
