One of Mahmudur Rahman's bail orders stayed

Thursday, 15 July 2010

The Supreme Court (SC) Wednesday stayed one of the four High Court (HC) bail orders granted Monday to Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of the recently closed Bangla daily newspaper Amar Desh, reports bdnews24.com.
Appellate Division chamber judge Justice Mohmmad Mozammel Hossain gave the orders, involving a case alleging police obstruction, following an application by the government. The judge asked the government to file a "leave to appeal" against the HC order.
The judge sent another government application to stay another of the bail orders also involving a case alleging obstruction of police duty to the regular bench of the Appellate Division for consideration.
The HC Monday had granted Rahman bail in four cases, including the two cases for obstructing police duty.
The government may appeal against the two other bail orders Thursday, said assistant attorney general Ekramul Haque.
Barrister Rafiq-ul-Haque appeared for the defendant, while attorney general Mahbubey Alam stood for the government.
On June 2, two cases were filed with Tejgaon and Kotwali police stations against Rahman for obstructing police duty. On June 7, a sedition case was also registered with Uttara police against him.
