CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Nov 22 (bdnews24.com): A Chapainawabganj court has sentenced one to death in an acid violence case.
Judge Arup Kumar Goswami of the district's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal passed the order Monday.
The convicted was identified as Aktherul Islam alias Tanu (27), son of Arshad Ali of Jalmachmari village, Shibganj Upazila. Tanu was present at the court when the sentence was being passed.
According to case, Tanu proposed one Tokiara Khatun (20), of the same village.
As Tokiara did not respond to his offer, Tanu had tried to sexually assault her forcefully entering her house. However, his attempt was foiled as the neighbours came to her rescue and caught Tanu.
Later the locals fined Tanu Tk 12,000 in a 'salish' (arbitration). After seven months since the incident, Tanu threw acid on Tokiara on Feb 16, 1998.
The locals rescued her and rushed a critically burnt Tokiara to the hospital. Later she was shifted to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where after 10 months of prolonged treatment she died on November 8.
The victim's sister Sufiara Begum filed a case against Tanu under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with the Shibganj Police Station.
