Onion import through Benapole land port declines

Saturday, 4 August 2007

BENAPOLE, Aug 3 (UNB): Onion import through Benapole land port has decreased recently due to imposition of new tax by the government. Importers here said onion import has decreased as government imposed anew 10 per cent import tax and increase of export price of onion by the Indian government.
The price of onion may rise in local markets ahead of Ramadan due to decline in import, traders apprehended.
Onion import was very poor in the first two weeks of July following the imposition of the import tax by National Board of Revenue (NBR) on July 1.
Earlier, onion could be imported in zero tax and huge onions were imported from India. Export price of onion from India was US$220 per metric ton till June 30. National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India has increased the price by US$ 100.
Customs sources said onion import from India will increase in next 1/2 months despite price rise by the Indian government and imposition of import tax by the Bangladesh government will not influence onion import.
Importers here demanded to withdraw the new tax on onion import ahead of Ramadan.
