Onion output on track to transcend target

The country is expected to surpass the production target of onion by nearly 300,000 this year, said an official of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Monday. He said that total output might reach 1.3 million (13 lakhs) tonnes this year, which is higher than the target of 1.07 million tonnes. Officials said some 162,000 hectares of land were brought under the onion production in the country this year. The production target of per hectare was 6. 64 tonnes. Field reports coming from various areas showed that the target has already been exceeded, they said. The DAE official said harvest of onion is almost complete and per hectare production is recorded at 7.0 to 10 tonnes in Pabna, Madaripur, Faridpur, Rajbari, Manikganj, and Shariatpur districts, the best onion producing areas of the country. According to the DAE Pabna districts office, around 36,040 hectares of land have been cultivated this year and 10.5 tonnes of onion were produced in per hectare. The deputy assistant agriculture officer Abdul Motalib of Pabna said the best production has been achieved from Shujanagar, Sadar and Shathia upazila of the district. He said favorable weather and availability of fertiliser has helped the boost production. "Besides, this year the crop is free from all kinds of diseases compare to the last year," he added According to the DAE Madaripur district office, around 3,330 hectares land has been cultivated this year where seven tonnes has been achieved in per hectare. The DAE Shariatpur office said the targeted land this year was 2340 hectares where cultivated land was 2550 hectare and production was 8.45 tonnes per hectare. The DAE officer at Faridpur district said there are 21,322 hectares of land were targeted for cultivation this year but 2,8228 hectares were cultivated where per hectare production is 9.50 tonnes. There are 1,5715 was cultivated against the target of 1,3862 hectares land in Rajbari district where 8.96 tonnes onion has been achieved in per hectare. The DAE officials said this year the farmers have got more training on different on better cultivation compare to the last year which have helped them to get good out come. They expressed the hope that the consumers will be able to buy the crop at a cheaper rate than the previous year.
