MAGURA, Mar 13: A wholesaler syndicate is dominating over onion price in Magura.
According to Agriculture Extension Department, Magura, a total of 1670 hectares of land was brought under onion cultivation in the district this year. A bumper production has been achieved in the district which is about 13,760 metric tonnes.
Consequently there is no shortage of onion in the local market. But wholesaler syndicate is reportedly manipulating the price exploiting consumers. Onion was being sold in the local market at Tk 20 per kg two weeks ago. But now the price has jumped to Tk 30 per kg through the supply of it in the local market is adequate. The weakness of monitoring from government agency is the reason behind price hike of onion, the consumers say.
Ranjan Debnath, a farmer of village Goalpara under Sreepur Upazila of Magura said, 'We were selling onion to the wholesalers at Tk 12 per kg two weeks ago. At that time onion was being sold by retailers at Tk 20 per kg. We are still selling onion to the wholesalers at Tk 12 per kg. But how it is being sold at Tk 30 per kg in the local market is beyond our goers.
