Onion prices rise in city markets

Prices of onion increased and green chilli declined while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Traders said prices of onion increased mainly due to decline in supply of the item in the rainy season.
During the last week, at retail level onion was selling at Tk 24-Tk 26 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 18-Tk 22 per kg.
Market operators said prices of green chilli declined mainly because of strengthening of market surveillance by the members of the law enforcement agencies.
The members of the law enforcement agencies caught red handed some vegetable vendors in the city markets during the manipulation of prices of green chilli and other vegetables.
During the last week at the retail level green chilli was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg, traders said.
During the last week, at the retail level, prices of brinjal remained unchanged at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 36-Tk 40 per kg, okra, snake gourd and ridge gourd at Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
During the last week at the wholesale level, soybean oil and super palm oil were selling at Tk 2470 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
Prices of palm oil remained unchanged at Tk 2460-Tk 2470 per maund during the last week.
At the retail level, five-litre cans of edible oil of different brands were selling at Tk 365, unchanged from the previous week.
At the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 980 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 26-Tk 28 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 21-Tk 22 per kg.
During the last week at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and Paari remained unchanged at Tk 750-Tk 780 per maund, Lata at Tk 850-Tk 860 per maund.
Prices of IRRI variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 700-Tk 710 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 850-Tk 900 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 920-Tk 930 per maund.
Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 1010-1020 per maund at wholesale level, traders said.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 72 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week ginger was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week beef was selling at Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
