Onion prospects bright in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Dec 6: Farmers of different areas of the district are changing their fate by cultivating onion. Unlike in previous years they are getting handsome benefit from this spice item this year.
According to Joypurhat DAE office this year onion cultivation was set for 864 hectares of land where 475 hectares of land have already been cultivated with the seasonal marble onion and when the full season of cultivation is near onion plants will be cultivated on T-Amon harvested and others crops harvested land. The office sources said that being an item of high price farmers of different areas specially of Panchbibi, Sadar and Akkelpur Upazila are eager to cultivate this crops with enthusiasm as the cultivation target will exceed the target.
The leaf onion began to appear in the market about 3 weeks ago with high price. Now the leaf onion is being sold at 28 to 32 taka kg.
The new onion without leaf is being sold at taka 32 to 34 as per quality and market positions.
Nayon Hossain, a farmer of Jamalgonj village under Akkelpur Upazila, told this correspondent that he has cultivated onion on of one acre and has begun to sell at a price of Tk. 800 per mound of leaf onion and he is now selling fresh onion at Tk. 1200 per mound. He added that the onion production cost has come down this year because seed and fertilizer prices have been reduced.
Abdul Waseque, Zonal Manager of RAKUB Joypurhat zone, told this correspondent that RAKUB provided for spice loan with only 2 per cent interest. So farmers could take it easily to cultivate any spice item with the help of this loan with low interest.
