Sunday, 11 December 2011

DU Correspondent Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Saturday said only a social movement could establish human rights in the country which is a precondition of a democratic nation. "Though we have achieved our independence through a nine-month bloody battle against the oppressor but the state is yet to attain its desired goals after 40 years of sovereignty" the minister said. Mr Nahid was inaugurating a three-day Human Rights Fair-2011 in Dhaka University (DU). Marking International Human Rights Day-2011, Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) organised the fair in cooperation with UK Aid and Norwegian Embassy, Bangladesh. More than 67 human rights organisations, who are working across the country for defending such kinds of rights, participated the fair and showcasing their activities. Some 10 human rights activists, who have outstanding contribution in protecting human rights in root levels from across the country, were awarded with honorary crests. Among others, Member of Parliament of Nepal Sita Devi Bodel, Norwegian ambassador to Dhaka Ragne Birte Lund, Executive Director of MJF Shahin Anam and Director of Social Awareness Society for Youth, India VA Ramesh Nathan addressed the inaugural programme.
