Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has expressed the hope that the opposition BNP would return to Parliament very shortly to make it more effective and vibrant.
The PM voiced her optimism when Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth Secretariat Ms Masire Mwamba called on her in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
Sheikh Hasina said that her government was trying hard to bring the opposition back to Parliament.
PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, who was present at the meeting, later briefed the reporters.
The PM said that as per the Constitution, if any member of parliament (MP) continues to remain absent for 90 working days, his/her seat would fall vacant. The number of working days is very close to 90 days for the absenting opposition members of the House.
The PM said the opposition members would return to Parliament to keep their membership. "Not only that, the opposition will return to Parliament to make the House more vibrant and effective," she added.
Sheikh Hasina said it is only the people of the country who will decide which party will run the government. "Only the people will decide through their voting power, none else."
Describing her government's various steps to make democracy more effective in the country, the PM said that her government formed all parliamentary standing committees in the first session of the current Parliament.
