Optical traders seek govt support to expand business

Country's optical traders have sought government support including slash in tax to expand the business.
"We have to pay around 70 per cent tax in different categories including value added tax and supplementary tax and this is really a burden to run our business with such a huge tax payment," Mr Babul Hossain, proprietor of the Brothers Optics Ltd, told the FE recently.
The optical traders also urged the government to appoint ophthalmologists in every upazila as only 3-5 percent, out of around 30 per cent population of the country who need spectacles, are now being covered due to lack of experts.
Bangladesh earned around $ 100,000 in last fiscal through exporting frames and lenses to the Middle Eastern countries, especially in UAE and Kuwait, where Bangladeshi expatriates are doing business, according to official figure.
Local industry is exporting quality optical lens, bi-focal glass, and frames of spectacles, industry sources claimed.
At present, China is the only dominating country from Asia in the field of spectacles export.
Brothers Optics is engaged in the field of optical components, optical instruments and optical lens in the country.
Babul Hossain also said they make scientifically-designed innovative products to meet popular expectations.
The company strives to manufacture optical components, optical instruments, optical lens that are designed as per international standards.
"With our efficient and prompt services, and excellent products, we also excel in environment-friendly production processes," he said.
"The production unit of the company is equipped with sophisticated machines and equipment, which enable us to produce the most reliable optical items, he added.
