NILPHAMARI, July 26: Panchagarh district authorities' proposal of organic tea as an exportable product from the district in response to the move of the Export Promotion Bureau is very encouraging.
Sources said some months back at the initiative of the EPB a survey was conducted by the district administration to select an exportable item of the district. In the light of that survey organic tea of Panchagarh has been proposed to be selected as an exportable item.
EPB initiated this venture in a bid to diversity the country's export items. Sources said at present Panchagarh district is producing quality organic tea though its volume of production is minimum. If requisite steps are taken by the government to increase the production of organic tea by increasing the number of organic tea producing gardens the export volume would increase manifold. At present there are 13 big tea gardens in the district. Each of those gardens has an area of over 20 acres of land. There are also 12 more gardens having areas from five to 20 acres of land, although very few gardens produce organic tea.
Local trade bodies have demanded expansion of organic tea cultivation in the district.
