Orion Power Khulna inks deal with French firm Alstom

Orion Power Khulna Ltd, a sister concern of leading industrial conglomerate Orion Group, signed contracts with Alstom of France to implement a 630-megawatt (mw) coal-fired independent power producer (IPP) plant.
Under the agreement, Alstom will provide boiler, turbine and generator with environment-friendly 'super critical technology', to set up the coal-fired power plant in Khulna.
Alstom will supply equipment within 24 months of signing the agreement to implement the project, which will supply electricity to the national grid.
Orion Group is currently generating electricity from two furnace oil-fired power plants built with Wartsila machine at Meghnaghat and Shiddhirganj, after constructing the plants within nine months of signing contracts.
Another furnace oil-fired IPP plant is set to start generating electricity by February 2014.
Orion Group has long been involved in a wide range of businesses like pharmaceuticals and healthcare, power generation, energy, infrastructure development, cosmetics and toiletries, construction, high-tech agro products, textiles and garments etc.
Alstom is a leading global firm in power generation, transmission and rail infrastructure.
On behalf of Orion Group, the agreements were signed by its Managing Director Salman Obaidul Karim, while on Alstom's behalf they were signed by Vice President Michael Kerul, Managing Director & Vice President Patric Ledermann and Director  Niraj Kaul.
The Ambassador of France Michel Trinquier, Chairman of Orion Group Mohammad Obaidul Karim, Director Mrs. Arzuda Karim and other high officials and employees were present at the ceremony.
State-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) inked deals of the joint venture of Orion-Long King to build three coal-fired power plants on build, own and operate (BOO) basis to generate a total of 1,087.34mw electricity in June 2012.
The consortium of Orion-Long King will use imported coal to generate electricity from these plants.
