BAGERHAT, Oct 1 (UNB): An outlawed party leader was killed in a 'shootout' with police and RAB at Chulkathi Palpara village under Sadar Upazila early Thursday.
During the gunfight four police and RAB members were also injured.
The deceased was identified as Riazul Haq Masud alias Bidi Masud (32), regional leader of the outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (ML-Janajuddha).
Acting on secret information, a joint team of police and RAB conducted operation at Chulkathi Palpara area when the outlaws were holding a clandestine meeting at about 5:00am.
Sensing their presence, the outlaws opened fire on them prompting the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
Masud was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his accomplices managed to flee the scene.
Police recovered three firearms, one sharp weapon, a number of 29 rounds of bullet and five cartridges from the spot. The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said Masud was wanted in 15 cases.
