Outlook for tourism in Bangladesh
Sunday, 8 November 2020
Talks of bright prospects of the growth of tourism industry in Bangladesh are always there since independence. But things didn't happen the way it was told and of course the country and its people have made some progress in this area, in a different manner.
For years, authorities were focused on attracting tourists from abroad. How far they are successful can be seenfrom the statistics: More than 95 per cent of our tourists are our local people. Also, most of the foreigners who come to visit Bangladesh, are basically non-resident Bangladeshis.
So there should be more focus on the growth of domestic tourism, building better infrastructures and quality of service. Our tourist spots need to be developed further and new ones should be explored. While our local tourists are exploring new spots, authorities could not even market them internationally. Hopefully, more tourists will flock the spots once the pandemic is over. The sector needs a boost to make up for the losses.
Therefore, sector leaders and authorities concerned should sit together and devise future strategies to ensure growth of the tourism industry in Bangladesh. Since the Bangladesh economy is growing with the potential for more business and investment opportunities, foreigners would come in and that is where tourism industry can also focus on.
