Outstanding Bangladesh-India issues
Friday, 11 September 2009
OUR Foreign Minister Dipu Moni has been on a visit to India to discuss several bilateral issues before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit later this year. We expect the visits to be fruitful for Bangladesh as India is one of the friendliest nations of Bangladesh. The two neighbours have a number of outstanding bilateral issues to resolve.
Sheikh Hasina can take a fresh initiative to resolve the outstanding issues with India during her visit.
For this, the new government should take help from the experts in different sectors.
Among the issues, Bangladesh needs to ask for India's adherence to the border guidelines as we cannot let our citizens be killed by the Indian BSF for nothing. We should ask India to honour the agreed border guidelines.
Bangladesh should also request India to honour its commitments on duty-free access to Bangladeshi products into the Indian market. India should stop using non-tariff barriers, undoubtedly a political tool, to subvert the exports from Bangladesh.
The opportunities for investments by entrepreneurs in each other's country also need expansion.
Cooperation in different sectors can be discussed during the upcoming visit.
