Experts Tuesday observed that through irregular and corrupt practices about 450,000 fake licenses are issued to unskilled drivers who are mainly responsible for road crashes across the country, reports BSS.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authorities (BRTA) can play a significant role in checking road accidents by monitoring and halting issuance of fake licenses to unskilled drivers, they said.
Experts made the observations while addressing the concluding ceremony of a 15-day 'Driving Instructors' Training Programme' organised by Accident Research Institute (ARI) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) at its council building auditorium.
With Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BUET Prof Habibur Rahman in the chair, Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Dr MS Akbar, MP, attended it as the chief guest.
Among others, Actor and Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai -- Ilias Kanchan, Director of ARI Dr Shamsul Hoque and Prof Monwar Hossain of BUET spoke.
The major reasons for road accidents are over speeding, overloading and overtaking, lack of knowledge on safe road use, lax enforcement of traffic laws, unskilled drivers, inappropriate road design and defective vehicles, Actor Ilias Kanchan said.
Director of ARI Dr Shamsul Hoque said that about 450,000 drivers were steering vehicles with fake or without license while the BRTA has so far issued 950,000 genuine driving license as against 1.35 million registered vehicles across the country.
