Over 0.63m Bangladeshi infants suffer from iodine deficiency

Over 6,30,000 infants in Bangladesh remain unprotected for lifelong consequences of brain damage associated with iodine deficiency, according to a survey.
Iodine deficiency can result in loss of productivity, which can cause a significant loss of intelligence quotient (IQ), said the survey entitled Iodine Deficiency Disorders and Universal Salt Iodisation in Bangladesh 2004-05.
The survey report was released at the advocacy workshop on the control of iodine deficiency disorder (CIDD) project, held in the city Wednesday. Organised by Bangladesh small and cottage industries corporation (BSCIC), the workshop was attended by Chief Adviser's special assistant Mahbub Jamil as the chief guest, Health and Family Welfare Secretary AMM Nasir Uddin, Industries Ministry Secretary Sheikh Enayetullah, UNICEF Deputy Representative Dr Iyorlumun Uhaa, USAID Director Lois Bradshaw and principal investigator Harun KM Yusuf.
BSCIC Chairman Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman presided over the CIDD Advocacy Workshop.
Mahbub Jamil said the government is committed to eliminating IDD through national as well as international endeavours.
