Over 0.97m criminal cases pending with courts

Some 972,019 criminal cases have remained pending with various courts in the country for more than five years, Law Minister Anisul Huq told Parliament Tuesday.
Of them, 253,832 cases are pending with various courts under the district judgeships, and the rest 718,187 cases remained pending with chief metropolitan magistrate/ chief judicial magistrate courts, he said replying to a starred tabled question of Rezaul Haque Chowdhury (Kushtia-1), according to a news agency.
Besides, some .50 million civil cases are now pending with the courts, the Law Minister informed.
In reply to another starred question of Bazlul Haque Harun (Jhalakati-1), he said that increasing the retirement age of the lower court judges to 62 years is now under consideration of the government following a directive of the higher court.
