SYLHET, Feb 17: Over 200 acres of paddy land would remain fallow on the Angaruli haor under Biswambharpur upazila under Sunamganj district this season due to absence of irrigation facilities.
The area, located in Shaktiarkhola and Durgapur Dakshin villages under Badaghat (Uttar) union couldn't be cultivated due to lack of sufficient water, a good number of farmers said.
Besides, another 120 acres of Boro land remained uncultivated due to the absence of water sources around, said some farmers of Shaktiarkhola.
Siltation of neighbouring Jamertola beel, Digha beel, Chatal beel and part of Jadukata river is the main reason, they added.
General secretary of the Misakhali Rubber Dam Management Committee Humayun Kabir said without arranging irrigation to the said area it is not possible to make the lands cultivable.
Some farmers attributed the problem to the fall in underground water level.
Besides, a vast tract of paddy land in Korchar haor area also remained uncultivated this season, he added.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Dipok Kumar Das said, "We requested the higher authorities for arranging drains along 1.5 km to facilitating irrigation from the Misakhali Rubber dam."
