Over 200 nominations cancelled

The two-day scrutiny of nomination papers ahead of the December 19 parliamentary election ended Thursday with cancellation of over 200 nominations on various charges across the country, reports BSS.
The candidates will, however, have the opportunity to appeal to the Election Commission against the decisions of the returning officers.
According to reports from different districts, nominations of five candidates, including valiant freedom fighter and second- in-command in the War of Independence in 1971 Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khandaker of Awami League from Pabna-2, were cancelled as a loan defaulter.
The four other candidates, whose nominations were cancelled on grounds of loan and bill defaults or hiding information are:
Sardar Shahjahan (JP), Siddiqur Rahman (NPP), Shariful Islam (Independent) and Yasin Arafat (Independent) in Pabna-1.
A total of 12 nomination papers were cancelled in Faridpur.
The prominent candidates who have lost their candidacy are: Kazi Sirajul Islam (Independent) in Faridpur-2, Kazi Zafrullah (AL) in Faridpur-4 and Shah Alam (4-party) in Faridpur-4.
In Narayanganj, six lost their candidacy after the scrutiny, bringing the total number in the district to 12. Mohammad Giasuddin (BNP) is one of the prominent candidates who have lost Candidacy.
