Over 35,000 killed, 53,000 injured: RSF

As many as 35,384 people were killed and 53,196 others injured in road accidents from January 2019 to June 2024, according to a report published by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) on Wednesday.
A total of 32,733 road accidents occurred during the period. The RSF claimed that the financial loss of the fatalities and other resources caused by the accidents amounted to Tk 878.84 billion.
Of the total deaths, 5,103 (14.42 per cent) were women, and 4,785 (13.52 per cent) children.
Among them, 11,593 people died in 11,669 motorcycle accidents, which was 32.76 per cent of the total deaths. The accident rate for the vehicle was 35.64 per cent.
As many as 8,358 pedestrians were killed in accidents, which was 23.62 per cent of the total fatalities. Moreover, vehicle drivers and their assistants were responsible for the deaths of 5,261 people or 14.86 per cent of the total.
During the mentioned period, 1,021 people were killed, 582 injured and 369 missing in 587 accidents occurred in the waterways. Railway accidents totalled 1,228, which caused 1,403 deaths and 1,269 injuries.
RSF compiled the report based on the news of nine national dailies, seven online news portals, and electronic media along with the organisation's own data.
According to the statistics of fatalities in accidents, the victims included 11,593 (32.76 per cent of the total) motorcyclists and passengers, 1,915 (5.41 per cent) bus passengers, 2,511 (7.09 per cent) people of cargo vehicles (including truck, covered van, tractor-trolley, lorry, etc), 1,544 (4.36 per cent) passengers of private car, microbus, ambulance, and jeep, and 6,080 (17.18 per cent) passengers of three-wheelers.
According to the RSF's monitoring and analysis, 11,942 (36.48 per cent) of the accidents occurred on national highways, 11,698 (35.73 per cent) on regional roads, 5,063 (15.46 per cent) on rural roads, 3,974 (12.14 per cent) occurred on city roads, and 56 (0.17 per cent) in other places.
Division-wise statistics of accidents show that accidents in Dhaka division were 24.96 per cent of the total.
