Over 500 suspected BDR mutineers held in last two days

As many as 520 BDR men were rounded up from Chittagong, Brahmanbaria, Satkhira, Khulna, Chuadanga, Feni, Jessore, Kushtia and Khagrachhari districts Wednesday night and Thursday morning as mass arrests of the suspected mutineers in the border force went on at the fag-end of prolonged investigations, report agencies.
UNB adds: In Chittagong, police arrested 100 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) jawans from Baitul Izzat BDR Training Centre in Satkania Upazila at about 7:00am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkania thana Aslam Hossain said, "The arrested BDR jawans were being taken to Satkania Amoli (cognizance) Court."
It was alleged that the BDR soldiers were involved in firing inside the Baitul Izzat BDR Training Centre on the second day of the February 25-26 mutiny at their Peelkhana headquarters in the capital.
In Brahmanbaria, Police, RAB and Army troops held 23 jawans of 1 Rifles Battalion. When produced, the court sent them to jail amid tight security.
Another UNB report from Chuadanga adds: Twelve BDR jawans of 35 Rifles Battalion were arrested in the morning from its district headquarters on charge of provoking their colleagues and looting firearms from storeroom.
OC Ahsan Habib of Sadar Thana filed a case against them in this connection Wednesday night.
Satkhira Correspondent of UNB said police arrested 27 BDR jawans of 41 Rifles Battalion from the battalion headquarters office in Sadar Upazila at about 8:00am.
In another raid, police held another 35 jawans of Nildumur-7 Rifles Battalion from the battalion headquarters at Nildumur in Shyamnagar Upazila at about 9:00am.
The border guards were arrested in connection with the BDR mutiny during the Peelkhana massacre on February 25-26.
All the arrested suspects were taken to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate AKM Shamsul Arefin in Sadar Upazila and another court of Judicial Magistrate MA Sayeed in Shyamnagar Upazila by vans at noon. The courts later sent them to the district jail.
On Wednesday (May 13), the police of Sadar and Shyamnagar thanas filed two separate cases against 27 jawans of 41 Rifles Battalion and 36 of Nildumuir-7 Battalion for their involvement in the mutiny.
Police said one of the jawans of the Nildumuir-7 Battalion remained absconding.
In Khulna, Khalishpur thana police arrested 49 jawans of Khulna BDR Sector Office from the sector office at city's Goalkhali at about 9:00am on the same charges.
They were produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Idris Siddiqui who ordered them into local jail at about 1:30pm.
The government last week filed a case with the local court accusing the BDR men of their involvement in mutiny.
bdnews24.com adds: In Feni, Dagonbhuiyan police chief Santosh Barua told the news agency that 64 BDR men were arrested from 19 Rifles Battalion headquarters at Jaylaskar Thursday morning.
The arrestees were taken to the local judicial magistrate court-2 at 9:30am, he said.
On the day after the February 25 Peelkhana mutiny, the men posted at Jaylaskar BDR camp broke the unit armoury, took out arms, fired shots in the air to create panic in the locality and barricaded the Feni-Maijdi road.
Barua filed a case Tuesday with the court, accusing 64 BDR men of armoury looting and hindering road traffic movement.
In Jessore, police detained 43 BDR men from 22 Rifles Battalion at Jhumjhumpur.
Additional police superintendent Zakir Hossain said they were shown arrested in the case filed in connection with the Februray 26 BDR mutiny in Jessore.
As the arrestees were produced before the court at around 10:00am, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Abdus Sabur Mina ordered them into jail.
