Over 5,000 tonnes potato exported from Rangpur

RANGPUR, Aug 14 (BSS): Over 60 local exporters with the assistances of bigger exporters exported over 5,000 tonnes granular potatoes to various foreign countries through Chittagong this year from Rangpur division, concerned sources said.
"Potato export has opened a real horizon now to the overall agro-economy in the northern region," President of Rangpur district unit of Potato Growers' Association Khwaja Ahmed said today. Talking to BSS, potato traders, exporters, chamber leaders and bigger potato growers said huge quantities of granular variety quality potatoes were exported to Singapore, Malaysian and Saudi Arabia this year. There are tremendous prospects of exporting potatoes to Africa, Europe and the far eastern countries through exploring the huge potato demands prevailing in those countries. "The foreign potato companies use the exported potato from Bangladesh in preparing different potato chips and many foodstuffs to earn huge profits by marketing those both at their homes and abroad," Rangpur Chamber leaders said. Bigger potato farmers Abdus Salam and Dinesh Chandra said the common framers would get the real benefits if the export continues expanding side-by-side setting up of agro-based industries in the region. Exporters said Taka 350 crore could be earned annually by exporting potato being produced in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Panchagarh and Kurigram alone to Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. "Potatoes of 100-gram to 250-gram in size are being packed in 4kg, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg mini packs in polythene nets for exporting to Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia by shipping from Chittagong," they said. Potato exporters of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong through their local agents have opened potato sorting, cleaning and packaging centres at Balabari, Paglapeer, Dhontola, Tapodhan, Mahiganj, Pirgachha, Gangachara and Mithapukur in Rangpur. Similar centres have been opened at Debiganj in Panchagarh, Kishoreganj, Jaldhaka and Dimla in Nilphamari, Birganj, Chirirbandar and Setabganj in Dinajpur and Kanthalbari in Kurigram and many other places in the region. The packed potatoes are being sent to Chittagong for exporting to different countries, President of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and valiant Freedom Fighter Mosaddek Hossain Bablu said. Partners of Bandon Agro-Trading Corporation of Rangpur Dulal and Anwar Hossain said that they have exported huge quantities of big-sized quality granular potato since March last to Malaysia through Miami Traders of Dhaka.
