Over 50pc businessmen of port city evade taxes

CHITTAGONG, Aug 6: More than 50 per cent businessmen of the port city have been evading taxes for long. The taxation authority has been able to trace the statistics from a survey for identification of tax-payers of similar nature, sources said.
Concerned official of the Chittagong Taxation region-1 gathered the information after conducting the survey at different business organisations, markets and shopping malls.
According to the sources, the tax officials of 11 survey teams formed for identification of new tax-payers stepped on the field and conducted the survey at 4,895 business organisations of three taxation zones of the port city.
Of them, number of tax-payers who have regularly paid their taxes is 2,369, while 2,526 others were identified fresh tax-payers who are not paying their taxes despite having economic solvency.
It has been detected that more than 50 per cent businessmen of the city have been refraining from paying taxes, sources added.
