FARIDPUR, Sep 15: Goalundo Textile Mills has been closed due to serious production shrinkage for acute crisis of raw cotton as well as excessive load shedding.
Over 700 workers and employees of the mill became unemployed due to the closure. The authorities closed the mills from September 1 to October 15. A notice was served by Managing Director (MD) Alhaj Nazir Uddin Ahmed in this regard. While, visiting the mill, it was known that relentless load shedding has shrunk the production and it faced the extreme crisis of finance. However, the crisis reached such a situation that it became uncertain to pay the salaries of the workers and the employees, clear the electricity bills and to manage raw cotton.
As a result, the mill was closed under section 12(Q) of Bangladesh Labour and Industrial Law.
Md Abu Bakr, security supervisor of the mill said, around 12 bales of cotton may be produced if the supply of electricity is ensured regularly. And the mill will again be a profitable industry, he added.
On July 12, 1975 the mill was inaugurated by AHM Kamruzzaman, the then Industrial Minister of Bangladesh. Although the mill was being operated in different obstacles, it was fulfilling some initial needs of the workers and employees. But with the closure of mill, 700 workers are passing their days in an inhuman condition. All the family members of workers and employees of the mill are counting their days with utter uncertainty.
