Over-consumption during Ramadan pushes up prices of edible oil

Prices of edible oil increased and the prices of green chilli and lemon declined slightly while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.
Trader said the over-consumption of edible oil during the Ramadan boosts the sales volume in the local markets.
Following the over-consumption of the item the prices of the same increased further over the past week.
Market operators said the annual consumption of edible oil in Bangladesh is more or less 1.3 million tonnes, but during the Ramadan additional 30,000 tonnes of the same are needed due to increase in the demand.
As a result, the local traders increase the prices of the item to some extent taking the opportunity of over-consumption, market operators said.
During the last week at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 2810-Tk 2815 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2710-Tk 2720 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2725-Tk 2730 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2660-Tk 2665 per maund and the palm oil at Tk 2670-Tk 2680 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 2650 per maund.
At the retail level, canned edible oil of different brands of five-litres was selling at Tk 395-Tk 400 compared with its previous rates at Tk 390-Tk 395, traders said.
At the retail level, one litre can of edible oil was selling at Tk 84-Tk 86 per kg compared with its previous rate at Tk 80.
Traders said the latest price hike of the edible oil in the local markets is temporary.
At the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 975 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 950 per maund. Traders said the prices of sugar increased slightly due to higher demand of the item in the Ramadan.
But, at the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week green chilli was selling at Tk 80-Tk 100 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk 150-Tk 160 per kg. Per four pieces of lemon was selling at Tk 8.0-Tk 10 compared with its previous rates at Tk 16-Tk 20.
Prices of both green chilli and lemon increased ahead of the Ramadan due to whimsical buying by customers, market operators said.
During the last week, prices of local variety of onion remained unchanged at Tk 40-Tk 42 per kg and its imported variety at Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg.
Prices of fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 76-Tk 80 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 64-Tk 66 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 76-Tk 78 per kg, traders said.
In the last week, prices of brinjal remained unchanged at Tk 48-Tk 50 per kg and bitter gourd at Tk 34-Tk 36 per kg.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
During the last week, at the wholesale level, prices of Indian variety of Swarna and local Paari remained unchanged at Tk 900-Tk 910 per maund, Lata variety at Tk 950-Tk 960 per maund and IRRI variety at Tk 850 per maund.
In the past week, prices of Nazirshail from Savar remained unchanged at Tk 1000 per maund, Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 1200 per maund and Minicate variety at Tk 1080-Tk 1100 per maund, traders said.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 29-Tk 32 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 24-Tk 25 per kg, traders said.
Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen, unchanged from the previous week at the retail level. During the last week ginger's price remained unchanged at Tk 46-Tk 50 per kg.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packaged coarse flour remained unchanged at Tk 34 per kg.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and beef at Tk 180 per kg.
During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 350-Tk 400 per piece, unchanged from the previous week.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 16 per kg.
