Overseas job situation demands a careful handling
Wednesday, 25 March 2009
It was reported in the papers that a few thousand Bangladeshis are finding jobs in Libya each month. The Libyan Ambassador in Dhaka told reporters recently that they were issuing about 300 visas on an average daily to skilled, semi-skilled and non-skilled Bangladeshi workers. He said that the situation was likely to improve in the future. This coming in the wake of the 55,000 visa rejects from Malaysia is heartening indeed.
The scenario is one of horror if one thinks about it -- Bangladeshis being sent back from foreign countries because of the worldwide recession coupled with the falling readymade garments export.
Let us hope that the people who run the government realise that these matters which are gong to strike us in the future have to be handled with extreme care and purpose. We can only hope and pray that the end of the fairy tale of readymade garments (RMG) exports is only temporary. Instead of giving their noble and well meaning views and homilies in talk shows and different public functions, our ministers and the state machinery should start to look for new markets and so on. Our diplomatic missions have a very important role to play here actually.
