Saturday, 2 January 2010

FE Report
The country's industrialists and employees are happy to return to normal time as a large number of workers regularly failed to report to their duties on time, thus, affecting production.
They said employees especially the women frequently reported late during the daylight saving time (DST) in the winter season. Bangladesh's garment units employs more than 80 per cent women of the total workforce of around 3.0 million.
Students, joggers and patients suffered due to the DST, concerned people claimed.
Shahedul Islam, president of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) said: "We faced serious trouble under the DST system as many workers used to fail to report to their duties on affecting the production."
He also said: "I have a carpet and jute bag manufacturing factory at Savar and my factory used to start operation one hour later due to delay of arrivals of workers."
The clocks were put forward by an hour on 19 June in 2009 for the first time, in an attempt to save electricity.
However, The clock was set back by an hour to 10:59pm
after it ticked 11:59 Thursday night, setting the original
timing position based on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Mr Shahed also said: "Those who run factories on two shifts a day were the worst sufferers of the DST."
Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, first vice president of the BGMEA, said: "Many factories re-scheduled working time table as many workers and employees used to be late."
"Work at my factory used to start at 8:00 am instead of 7:00 am."
BCI chief said "Workers faced security problem both in the early morning and evening hours."
However the DST will be effective again from March 31 in an attempt to save the electricity during summer.
The DST will remain effective until October 31 in 2010.
Meanwhile, an official announcement Thursday said break for Zohr prayers and lunch at all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous organisations has been rescheduled as per the new timing system "until further order".
The break for Zohr prayers and lunch will be from 1pm to 1:30pm from January 1 to March 31 while from 2pm to 2:30pm from April 1 to October 31 under the variable timings.
