Pabna farmers taking to composite cultivation of turmeric, chilli

PABNA, Nov 13: Cultivation of turmeric with chilli in gaining popularity among the farmers as it brings financial benefit to the farmers of the district.
They cultivated turmeric on 1,781 hectares of land along with chilli this year, sources said. On seeing the financial benefit, other farmers also came forward and followed the same technique of turmeric cultivation along with chilli.
Enamul Haque of Madhupur village in Santhia Upazila in the district cultivated one and a half bigha land of turmeric with chilli.
He has already sold chilli valued at Tk 70,000 before harvesting of turmeric. He expects to sell chilli worth Tk 0.15 million to 0.2 million more and sell turmeric over Tk 0.1 million to 0.12 million.
"Turmeric with chilli cultivation on and bigha of land costs Tk 20,000 to 25,000. If there is no natural calamity, a farmer can get a total of Tk 0.11 million to 0.15 million from the land in a season. One can easily earn a profit of Tk 80,000 to 0.1 million from one bigha," said Md Jalal Uddin, of village Madhpur in Santhia Upazila.
Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy Director of Agricultural Extension Department said at least 1,781 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric and chilli cultivation in the district in current year while it was around 1,760 hectares last year.
