PABNA, Dec 20: Pabna Sugar Mills started production Friday with the target of crushing 65,000 tonnes of sugarcane despite incurring a loss of Tk 610 million, official source said.
Samsur Rahman Sarif Dilu, MP, inaugurated the sugarcane crushing programme as chief guest at the mills premise.
Managing Director of the company Md Lokman Hossain chaired the programme.
Saiful Islam Chowdhury, Director General of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute, Pabna Police Superintendent Nibash Chandra Majhi, President of District Sugarcane Farmers' Association Shajahan Ali Badsha spoke on the occasion.
Official sources said by crushing 65,000 tonnes of sugarcane 3,500 tonnes of sugar would be produced this year. The operation would continue for 44 days to achieve the target.
Pabna Sugar Mills crushed 69,839 tonnes of sugarcane and produced 4,298 tonnes of sugar last year. The target of crushing 80,000 tonnes of sugarcane last year could not be achieved due to the non-availibity of sufficient quantity of sugarcane, the sources added.
Following last year's experience Pabna Sugar Mills has fixed a poor target of crushing 65,000 tonnes of sugarcane this year because the sugarcane cultivation area has reduced considerably.
Company sources said the farmers have cultivated sugarcane in 5,000 acres of land around the mills zone this year.
Sugarcanes need to be cultivatated in at least 14,000 acres of land around the mills area." Md Kamruzzaman, General Manager of Pabna Sugar Mills told this correspondent.
Pabna Sugar Mills has been incurring losses every year since its inception in 1997.
Md Lokman Hossain said, "We hope to achieve the target this year. We have already asked the sugarcane farmers to supply their produce to the mills for achieving the target."
