PABNA, Nov 8: The sugarcane farmers formed a human chain on the Abdul Hamid road in Pabna district town Saturday demanding the increased price of sugarcane. The farmers also demanded loan on easy terms for cultivating the crops.
Over 100 farmers of Pabna Sadar Upazila joined the human chain demanding the increase in the prices of sugarcane in farmer's interest.
Tk 13,000 is needed to cultivate sugarcane in one bigha of land. The cultivation period is 18 month. But when the farmers sell their crops, they earn Tk 17,000. If the farmers cultivate other crops in those lands they could earn more money.
'If we cultivate offer paddies in these lands we would earn Tk 50,000 easily', the farmers claimed. The farmers also alleged that they often do not get the bank loan to cultivate the crop so easily. They demanded the government to ensure the bank loan for sugarcane cultivation and increase the price of the crop on the occasion.
A non-government organisation arranged the human chain programme. Executive director of the organisation Noresh Madhu chaired the programme.
The farmers carried the sugarcane in their hands on the occasion protesting the negligence to the farmers.
