Padma erosion takes serious turn in Pabna

PABNA, Sept 10 (UNB): Erosion by the river Padma has taken a serious turn devouring 50 homesteads of Narunahati village in Sujanagar upazila in last few days.
The affected people have been passing their days in great distress under the sky.
Sources said the intensity of erosion is so severe that affected people found no time to shift elsewhere with their goods and other belongings. They are found to sell their moveable properties and tree at throwaway prices.
Meanwhile, vast areas of arable land, trees and one educational institution of the village went into the gorge of the river.
Victim Khalil Member said, the river Padma eroded thousands of houses and vast croplands in last 10 years in the district and his dwelling houses were washed away seven times in his life time.
Local people said no steps have yet been taken to check river erosion and the homeless families did not get any help from the government or any other organization.
They said hundreds of houses, vast areas of croplands, trees, educational institutions and madrassahs of Singhanagar, Shyamnagar, Bhatpara, Gupinpur, Maspara, Raipur, Malfia, Kamarhat, Indrojitpur, Mohonpur, Mohabbatpur, Udoypur and Goaria villages in the upazila are now facing erosion threat.
