RAJSHAHI, Nov 14: Indigenous fish worth Tk 30 million is expected to be produced every year from the Minkut-Jafrabad fish sanctuary adjacent to the river Padma under Godagari Upazila of the district. The fish include river Pangus (not cultured), Bagha-Airh, Airh, Ritha, Ruhi, Katla, Kalboush and Hilsha.
The government took up the project in 2008 on 510 hectares of water-bodies near the confluence of the Padma and the Mohananda extending from Rail Bazar to Sultanganj.
From the early rainy season, restriction was imposed on fishing in the sanctuary though many were found to be defying the ban either by design or ignorance. Godagari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sarwar Murshed Chowdhury and Upazila Fisheries Officer Amjad Hossain along with the members of law enforcement agencies recently intensified patrolling along the sanctuary.
People living nearby were warned over loudspeakers ("miking") of punitive measures if anyone was found violating the ban. As a result, fish of various indigenous varieties have bred unmolested in the sanctuary.
Sources said, the government spent Tk 0.5 million this year for the preservation and release of fish fries in the sanctuary.
RU students demonstrate as vehicles miss schedule
Around 800 students of Rajshahi University (RU) staged a demonstration Wednesday demanding new vehicles with the existing buses often missing schedule.
Samsul Arefin Himel, a 3rd year student of the Law and Justice Department said, 'The administration did not take any initiative to purchase any new buses in last three years.'
Sources said the remuneration of an RU driver, who is a class-three employee, is Tk 2850 while a general employee in administration gets Tk 3,100 as a class-four employee. To solve this discrimination, various committees had been formed by the authority, but no committee could solve the problem.
Students complained to this correspondent, "Most of the days the university vehicles miss their schedule.”
