CHITTAGONG, April 15: Fighting out the morning showers hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life came out of homes to enjoy the Bengali New Year - Pahela Boishakh - in Chittagong on Thursday. From around 6.00 in the morning people along with their children thronged the DC Hill and Chittagong Railway Building area Shirishtala, the two major celebration venues in the port city. Students, teachers and formers students of the Fine Arts Institute of Chittagong University brought out a huge colourful rally with placards and festoons and paraded the city streets. Chittagong Press Club also organized Pitha Utsav and daylong cultural programme at the Press Club hall. Sammilito Pahela Boishakh Udjapan Parishad started the day's programmes at the DC Hill by illuminating Mongal-Pradip, musical soiree, recitation of poems. Naba Barsha Udjapan Parishad organized daylong attractive folk songs and folk dances at the CRB Shirishtala. Besides, the day was observed by different socio-cultural bodies at more than 40 places across the city. Hundreds of makeshift shoppers made a good earning by selling foods, dolls, masks, handicrafts and other local products of varied colours and designs. Ahmed Iqbal Haider, organizer of the programmes at the DC Hill said observance of the Bengali Year End and New Year contributes a lot to the country because these moments bring all the Bangalees together above the barriers of religion, caste and creed. Children, youths, men, women and activists of the socio-cultural, voluntary and professional organisations wearing traditional dresses came out on the streets after sunrise to welcome the Bengali New Year. Another report adds from Rangpur: Pahela Boishakh was celebrated with festivity and various programmes everywhere in the division Thursday. People of all ages irrespective of their caste, creed and religions took part in the Bengali New Year celebrations in all the eight districts and 58 upazila towns and other places turning the whole division into a place of festivity. The district and upazila administrations, socio-cultural, political and professional organisations, educational institutions, NGOs, aboriginal communities and private bodies chalked out elaborate colourful programmes.
