Pahela Boishakh observed in Jordan

Pahela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year-1418, has recently been observed in a festive manner in Jordan by the Embassy of Bangladesh in the country, according to a press release. Cultural programme, comprising of Bangla songs, dances and recitations, was held at the Al-Hussein Cultural Centre auditorium in Amman. Noted Bangladeshi singer Zeenat Rehana came to Jordan to take part in the cultural programme. The auditorium was decorated with Bangladeshi handicrafts, products and posters. A 'pitha utshab' was also arranged in the cultural centre. The audience included dignitaries from the Jordanian press and civil society, foreign ambassadors and diplomats, representatives from UN agencies and a large number of Bangladeshi diaspora in Jordan. The cultural programme created a good enthusiasm among the expatriate Bangladeshi community in the country. The programme was highly appreciated by the Jordanians and other foreigners, as they commented that it was a great opportunity for them to know about the culture and traditions of Bangladesh. Members of Bangladeshi expatriate community thanked the embassy for arranging such a programme. Ambassador M Fazlul Karim welcomed the audience. Wishing everyone a joyous Bangla New Year, he rendered a brief history of the Bangla calendar and its effect on the social and cultural life of the people of Bangladesh. The Bangla New Year has become a symbol of national and cultural unity, Mr Karim mentioned. The cultural programme was organised with a view to acquainting the Jordanians about our rich cultural heritage and enhances the country's image in Jordan, he added. A dinner featuring traditional Bangladeshi food was served at the end of the cultural programme.
