Pairaband prepares for Rokeya Day

RANGPUR, Dec 8 (BSS): All preparations have been completed in observance of the Rokeya Day-2010 through 3-day elaborate programmes from today at Pairaband village under Mithapukur Upazila here in a befitting manner.
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Jashim Uddin Ahmed will formally inaugurate the observance by placing floral wreaths at Begum Rokeya Smriti Stambha at 9am in the morning.
President of `Anumito Hisab Somporkito Sangshadiyo Sthayee Committee' HN Ashiqur Rahman, MP, will attend the concluding ceremony as the chief guest on December 11 with Deputy Commissioner BM Enamul Haque in the chair.
The programmes include milad mahfil at Pairaband Jam-e-Mosque, daily discussion meetings on the contributions of Begum Rokeya to the women movements and her life, blood donation, essay, drawing and recitation competitions and cultural functions.
Besides, a three-day traditional `Rokeya Fair' will be launched today afternoon with hundreds of stalls from all over the country and dramas will be staged focusing discriminations against the women community, women empowerment and rights.
Renowned literary personalities will present three keynote papers focusing on the life and deeds of the pioneer of women renaissance and great social philosopher of that time Begum Rokeya on December 9, 10 and 11 respectively.
The papers are: 'Begum Rokeya's Literary Works, Perspective and Artistic Values', Begum Rokeya's Thoughts about Education, Social Conscience and Politics', and `Begum Rokeya's Thoughts for Women, Achievements and Today's Women'.
Renowned women and human rights activists, literary personalities, educationists, Rokeya Researchers, professionals, public representatives and political leaders will take part in the daily discussions.
Divisional Commissioner Jashim Uddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Prof Dr M Abdul Jalil Miah and President of `Anumito Hisab Somporkito Sangshadiyo Sthayee Committee' HN Ashiqur Rahman, MP, will attend the discussions as the chief guests on December 9, 10 and 11 respectively.
Great woman Begum Rokeya, pioneer of women renaissance in the sub-continent, was born in village Pairaband on December 9 in 1880 and died on the same day in 1932 in Kolkata.
The birth and death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya are being officially observed as Rokeya Day since 1994 under the auspices of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs at the village, the birthplace of the unparalleled woman in the sub-continent.
Begum Rokeya had struggled with her all-out efforts for establishing women rights, freedom, education, empowerment, economic emancipation and movements that created a renaissance in the then highly conservative and British-ruled colonial society.
