Pak livestock contribution to agriculture GDP rises to 52pc

LAHORE, Aug 5 (APP): The contribution of livestock income in the GDP of agriculture sector has risen to 52 per cent but its share in government funding has always been comparatively low.

University of Veterinary and Animal Science (UVAS) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Muhammad Nawaz stated this at a seminar on UVAS research projects funded by Agriculture Linkages Programme (ALP) of Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) Islamabad, here yesterday.

The VC said the UVAS faculty was actively engaged in research in the livestock, poultry, fisheries, wildlife and related fields and the number of their research articles in the impact factor journals had risen tenfold last year.

The university was producing trained and competent manpower, which was direly needed in the livestock and related sectors, he said and called for increase in the milk and meat yield to meet their growing demand in the country and abroad.

He said that UVAS had initiated new degree programmes last year and this year evening postgraduate programmes were being launched for promotion of higher education on the culture of inter-departmental and inter-university collaborations to enhance the standard of education and research.

ALP Executive Director Dr. Shahida Jamil spoke about the 4th batch of AIP project, opportunities, linkages and new priorities. She said that Agricultural Linkages Programme promotes and supports agricultural research and developmental activities in the country. She sought well-conceived research projects with long-term objectives from the university faculty for funding.

PARC's Member Animal Sciences Dr Khalid Naeem Khawaja spoke about the PARC's expectation from the researchers in the animal and veterinary sciences.

He said that breeding and genetics, animal health, animal reproduction, livestock product technology and fisheries and aquaculture were the PARC's priority areas of research.
