Pakistan sets cotton crop size at 12.7m bales in 2010

ISLAMABAD, Jan 10 (Commodity Online): Pakistan's Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) estimated this year's cotton crop size at 12.7 million bales as against the previous estimate of 12.1 million bales.
The CCAC, constituted by Ministry of Food and Agriculture, revealed this during its second meeting to estimate the size of the expected cotton crop production during the year 2009-10.
The expected province-wise cotton crop size is Punjab 8.40 million bales, Sindh 4.20 million bales, Balochistan and NWFP 0.1 million bales.
The committee also noted that cotton arrivals reported by Pakistan Cotton Ginners' Association (PCGA) as on January 1, 2010 were at 11.930 million bales, which was 22.44 per cent higher as compared to the same period last year.
The Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) fixed the cotton area and production targets for 2009-10 at 3.20 million hectares and 13.36 million bales, respectively.
Province -wise breakup was, Punjab 10 million bales, Sindh 3.25 million bales, NWFP 0.01 million bales and Balochistan 0.10 million bales.
The FCA earlier estimated cotton production for this season (2009-10) at 12.10 million bales against the target of 13.36 million bales.
According to the first estimate of cotton crop during 2009-10 season cotton crops have been sown on an area of 3.072 million hectares, which was 2.54 per cent less than the target and 8.95 per cent more than the sown area of 2.820 million hectares in 2008-09 crop season.
World cotton situation: World cotton production was expected to decline by 5.17 per cent in 2009-10. US Cotton production was estimated at 12.5 million bales in 2009-10, down by 2.51 per cent from 2008 -09.
Production was expected to decline in China, Brazil and Uzbekistan. Cotton production is projected upward in Pakistan.
