Panel elected for JU VC appointment

Friday, 21 February 2014

Senate members of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Thursday elected a three-member Vice Chancellor panel for the appointment of a VC to the university. Of the elected panel members, loyal to former VC Prof Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir, JU Teachers’ Association (Juta) executive member and teacher of Anthropology Prof Dr Farzana Islam bagged the highest 40 out of 70 votes, while Prof Dr Abul Hossain of Physics Department and Prof Dr Amir Hossain of Economics Department polled 33 respectively. According to the rule, the list of the three-member panel will be sent to the Chancellor of the university to appoint the VC for a four-year term. Two panels – one loyal to immediate past VC Prof Dr Awnar Hossain and another to Prof Dr Shariff Enamul Kabir – contested the VC panel polls held at the Senate hall of the university’s administrative building. Under the panel, led by Prof Anwar, acting JU VC Prof Dr MA Matin, pro-VC Prof Dr Afsar Ahmed and former VC Prof Dr Abdul Bayes vied in the polls. In the face of a prolonged movement, Prof Dr Anwar Hossain stepped down as the VC on January 22. Pro-VC Prof Dr MA Matin has been performing the duty of VC since then, according to UNB.
