Panel wants police to use seized cars

The parliamentary standing committee on the home ministry has decided to propose a law that would enable police to use confiscated cars and motorcycles. Committee Chairman Tipu Munshi said that the panel agreed to send a letter to this effect to the law ministry. “Many cars remain idle in police stations year after year. No one claims ownership,” Tipu Munshi said. “It will be better if police can use these (cars),” he viewed. The panel chief said the law enforces were facing a shortage of vehicles for a long time but there were some legal obstacles to using the impounded cars and bikes. “These vehicles can’t be used without court’s permission,” he said. “We will send a letter to the law ministry to resolve the legal complexities,” he told reporters after a meeting. The committee, in its last meeting, had proposed that the police use the seized cars and motorcycles lying unclaimed at different police stations. Following the proposal, police’s Additional DIG (transport) said the court’s permission was required for using those vehicles. Tipu Munshi told the latest meeting of the parliamentary watchdog that over 100,000 cars and motorcycles were rotting at police stations at present, according to bdnews24.com.
