Para-tariff, non-tariff barriers for India
Monday, 8 September 2014
Bangladesh needs to impose similar para- tariff and non-tariff barriers on import of goods and services from India. Since the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971, the country has been importing goods and services from India with gradual enhancement in quantity.
On the other hand, Bangladesh has been exporting a negligible amount of goods to India. The government of Bangladesh has requested India repeatedly to withdraw para-tariff and non-tariff barriers to increase Bangladeshi exports to that country. The Indian government did not take mentionable steps to address our requests. Last year, Bangladesh imported goods and services amounting to over five billion US dollars from India, whereas it exported goods amounting to a little over half a billion US Dollars to India. Even if India removes all types of para-tariff and non-tariff barriers, Bangladesh will not be able to export goods to India equal to their volume imported from India.
To increase exports to India, Bangladesh ought to change its trade strategy. We have to impose similar para-tariff and non-tariff barriers on import of goods and services from India.
As a result, imports from India will sharply reduce initially. Definitely, India will start evaluating the situation in earnest. It will then, in most likelihood, reduce the existing para-tarrif and non-tariff barriers for Bangladesh and allow our goods to enter India and, later, will ask us to lower the barriers imposed on its products.
