Parliamentary oversight of public money stressed

Speakers at a workshop underlined Tuesday the need for sound public financial management, saying it is a "prerequisite" for the country to become a middle-income nation by 2021.
They also said strengthening the oversight of public accounts through the parliamentary committees is crucial to ensure proper utilisation of scarce public resources.
The comments came at the workshop in the city, dedicated to strengthening parliamentary oversight project.
The project was undertaken with a view to increasing accountability and transparency on the use of public fund.
Mahiuddin Alamgir, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, the project would shore up legislative oversight through better functioning of the parliamentary committees that deal with allocation and monitoring of public resource.
The bank's Dhaka office launched the PAC website with an aim to continue reforms in public financial management to ensure proper resource allocation and better public service delivery.
