Parliamentary team visits Ctg port

CHITTAGONG, Jan 08: The parliamentary standing committee for shipping ministry today visited the Chittagong port and inspected its operational activities and facilities.
The 8-member team comprising shipping minister Shahjahan Khan and members from the ruling and opposition parties headed by Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury saw the activities at the container terminal, general cargo sheds, car shed, one-stop service, fibre optic based CCTV camera control room, container scanner system, CPA truck terminal and other facilities.
They also had separate meetings with the senior port officials, berth and ship handling operators and dock labour leaders in the evening.
Later the team leader Chowdhury said, they would suggest a master plan to build Chittagong port as one of the leading ports of South East Asia.
He said, a 17-member team headed by shipping minister will be shortly visiting the major ports of the south-east region including the Port Kelang of Malaysia and inspect their operational activities. Following the visit they will recommend the steps to enhance expertise in Ctg port.
The team is scheduled to leave Dhaka on 12 January.
He said that the team will also suggest enhancement for accommodation facilities in the car shed and reclaim all lands of the port illegally occupied by the influential quarters.
