Patel meets NBR chairman

The World Bank (WB) South Asia Vice president, Praful C Patel, Thursday met with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Muhammad Abdul Majid to know about the internal resource mobilisation against the backdrop of adverse effect on the economy caused by cyclone Sidr.
WB country director Xian Zhu and WB consultant Zaidi E Sattar were with Patel during the meeting with the NBR chief, who is also secretary of the internal resource division (IRD). They discussed about the government's available internal resources for post Sidr rehabilitation.
Sources said the WB mission has been assessing the position of internal resources of the government before sanctioning fund for post-Sidr rehabilitation.
They said the WB has also been making assessment of damage and internal resource flow before extending financial support to the country for the post-Sidr rehabilitation and sustainable disaster protection.
The WB has already assured Bangladesh of providing $250 million for post-sidr rehabilitation.
On Wednesday, the government sought $2.21 billion worth of assistance from international donors to finance post-cyclone rehabilitation schemes and sustainable disaster protection programme in the affected coastal areas.
Patel, who arrived in Dhaka on Thursday last, also met the finance adviser. He will also call on chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed today (Friday).
Meanwhile, the NBR collected tax revenue worth Tk 158.20 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal, exceeding the target for the period by Tk 4.64 billion.
The amount includes Tk 71 billion worth of revenue collected at import stage against target Tk 68.61 billion and Tk 53.44 billion at local stage against target of Tk 55.17 billion.
The collection on account of income tax was Tk 32.12 billion against the target of Tk 28.34 billion.
The government set the total tax revenue collection target of Tk 438.50 billion for the fiscal 2007-08, representing a 17 per cent increase over that of the revised target of Tk 374.79 billion in the fiscal 2006-07.
