Patriotism is a part of Iman

Friday, 24 April 2009

Our greatest and most favourite Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, ''Patriotism is a part of Iman (Faith).''
Patriotism involves some obligations through which alone it receives practical manifestation. The mere feeling or declaration that I love my country has no value unless one proves by action that one is a patriot. The first of these is to place the country's collective interest above the self-interest of the individual. This requires that a patriot will serve the country and, if necessary, at the cost of his or her own life and interests. The self shall, in short, be identified with the whole, both living and dying together. Secondly, patriotism calls for the cultivation of high individual character, hatred for wrong and love for truth and piety. It is such high and edified character by means of a healthy synthesis. Patriotism, in brief, is not merely to be professed but demonstrated amidst patriotic actions and thoughts.
