Paturia-Daulatdia route closed
Monday, 4 August 2014
Strong winds and matching currents have stopped launches from travelling between Paturia and Daulatdia.
Hundreds of people looking to cross the confluence of the mighty rivers Padma and Jamuna are now stranded on the banks after the operation was suspended at 3pm Monday, according to a news agency.
Usually, 37 launches run the river route, said Kabir Hossain, a BIWTA official at Aricha terminal.
“There were big waves and strong currents in the river. So we stopped launch operations to avoid disasters.”
Launches will resume crossings once the 'situation gets back to normal', he said.
Earlier in the day, Pinak-6, a launch taking 250 passengers from Kewrakandi to Mawa drowned in a matter of minutes while being engulfed by strong currents on the Padma River.
So far two bodies have been found but the sunken vessel is yet to be located.
Rescuers working at the accident site say adverse weather conditions are disrupting their efforts.
