Friday, 12 December 2008

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, which is castigated for its role against the country's Liberation War in 1971, pledged in its election manifesto to strengthen the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs and enhance the allowances for the freedom fighters (FFs), reports UNB.
Announcing the manifesto Thursday for December 29 parliamentary elections, Jamaat chief Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami first saluted with deep respects the FFs martyred during the Liberation War by Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators.
He said that his party would take part in the election under the four-party alliance led by the BNP, the immediate-past ruling party.
The Jamaat chief expressed his hope that the journey of democracy would start anew in Bangladesh through the upcoming general election, being held against the backdrop of turmoil on the political arena which had led to the declaration of the state of emergency in the country on January 11, 2007.
The Jamaat party manifesto focuses its political faith in a "stable democratic system and the rule of law" in the country.
It will increase salaries of government employees as a measure for curbing corruption, which appeared to have upset the country's sociopolitical and economic system.
If the party comes to power as a partner of the alliance, it will "build strong defence forces through formulating national defence policy". It will also take programmes for curbing terrorism and corruption.
Jamaat will give highest importance to education, prioritising technical and vocational education.
The party declared its plan to stop student politics in the country's educational institutions.
Jamaat will adopt modern technology to ensure food security, exempt farmers from the payment of agri-loans and also distribute soft credits among the farmers.
It will work for price control of essentials.
The party will provide necessary facilities to the farmers, including supply of fertiliser, seeds and pesticides, and also declared to form wage board for workers in the agriculture sector.
The party manifesto also declared to ensure financial security for the workers of the readymade garment industry.
It will construct underground rail and necessary flyovers to reduce traffic jams in the capital and divisional towns.
The party will also work for strengthening the gas and coal sector and also set up small power plants to reduce load shedding.
They will also work for a pollution-free environment and poverty alleviation.
Jamaat announced in the manifesto that the party would include FFs in Hajj delegation every year, if it came to power as a partner of the coalition.
