Pay tax regularly to ensure dev: Speakers

Gazipur, Feb 14: Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Haque has said that the government wants to give the best services to the people at grass-roots level.
For this reason, the people have reposed great confidence on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.
"Our commitment is to increase the level of services. At the same time, the government has adopted the principle of zero tolerance for corruption and it aims to free corruption from all walks of the society, he said while speaking as the chief guest at a dialogue in Gazipur City on Thursday.
Presided over by Tax Commissioner of Gazipur tax zone Mohammad Ali Asghar, the event, titled 'Partnership Revenue Dialogue', was organised by Gazipur tax zone at BangaTaj Auditorium.
Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam, NBR members Kalipodo Haldar and Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Prof Dr. M A Mannan, Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Md. Gias Uddin, Additional Tax Commissioner Mohammad Shahadat Hossain Sikder, best taxpayer award recipient Mobarak Hossain were present at the event and also spoke.
Addressing the programme, minister Mozammel Haque urged the countrymen to pay tax regularly.
NBR Chairman Bhuiyan said the number of taxpayers in our country is not more than two million, which is not enough.
He mentioned that the rates of GDP in different countries in the world is 15 to 20 per cent.
"On the other hand, it is only nine to 10 per cent in our country. It is not sufficient," he noted.
He said: "We need to cooperate with the government so that we do not have to depend on anyone."
"It is our moral and religious duty to pay taxes regularly," he added.
